The Double Cleanse ⫸ What is it? Why?? What do I use???

by Shahper Richter

As mentioned in our previous blog 10 Step Skincare Routine, double cleansing forms the first two steps of the 10 step Korean skincare routine. What is it and what are some products that you could use?

The Korean double cleansing method involves cleaning your face in two steps. In the first cleanse you use an oil-based cleanser and in the second cleanse you use a water-based cleanser. Using these two steps together ensures that your skin is thoroughly cleansed. This is especially important on those days where you have been outdoors for extended periods of time, worn makeup, or worked out.

Oil-based cleansers come in either solid or liquid form. The purpose of the oil-based cleanse is to bind to the surface pollutants, excess sebum, makeup, and sunscreen, so that they can be rinsed away easily. Oil-based cleansers should be applied to dry skin with dry hands, remember there won’t be any lathering required with this type of cleanser. Once you have massaged that in, you add in a bit of water and the mixture should turn milky. Now all you need to do is remove this with warm water or a washcloth.

Heimish All Clean Balm

Make sure you choose an oil cleanser that does not contain mineral oils as these will just clog your pores making acne-prone skin worse.

The Heimish All Clean Balm is my top pick for an oil-based cleanser. This iconic balm removes makeup effortlessly and leaves your skin feeling clean but hydrated and refreshed. The Skin1004 Madagascar Centella Light Cleansing Oil is another favourite. This one is super lightweight and non-irritating leaving your skin feeling refreshed and dewy!

Water-based cleansers can be either foaming or non-foaming. The main issue with foaming cleansers is that they can be rather alkaline which can irritate sensitive skin types. The main purpose of the second cleanse is to get rid of any remaining oil and sweat! This type of cleanser is applied to wet skin and massaged all over your face, neck, and décolletage, do not forget your hairline!!

Lagom Cellup Micro Foam Cleanser

There are so many water-based cleansers to choose from. The Lagom Cellup Micro-Foam Cleanser reaches deep into the pores to remove any trace of remaining oil or makeup. The Lagom Cellup Gel Cleanser is a good alternative as it turns into a water-based texture instead of foaming up. This one is gentler than its foaming cousin.

Remember Korean skincare is all about prevention and taking care of your skin before problems occur. To this end, double cleansing aims at thoroughly cleansing your skin free of any impurities keeping acne breakouts at bay. Double cleansing also ensures you have a clear canvas for additional skincare to be effectively absorbed into your skin. While you could double cleanse twice a day, it probably isn’t necessary in the morning, especially if you have dry or sensitive skin.
