What is Korean Beauty? + Why your skin needs it now!!!

by Shahper Richter

You have probably heard of Korean beauty or “K-beauty” by now, the infamous multi-step Korean-based skincare routine that has taken the world by storm. But what is it exactly, and why has it become one of the most talked-about skincare routines in the beauty world? Come with me as I give you a short rundown on what k-beauty is all about and why you need to start introducing these products into your routine.

What is k-beauty? So if you are new to this type of skincare, you may be wondering what all the fuss is about. Korean beauty essentially refers to brands and products originating from South Korea. The products emphasise hydration, brightening, and giving you “glass skin.” Beauty and skincare is serious business in South Korea, and the average customer is very knowledgeable about different ingredients, their uses, and their effectiveness. Korean brands, as a rule, have very high standards for innovation and for transforming the most natural ingredients into bio-available and shelf stable versions, with see it for yourself results. And so, we have been introduced to utterly novel skincare products not previously seen in your average Sephora or Mecca, like sheet masks, cushion compacts, essences and pimple patches.

Two things stand out when it comes to explaining k-beauty.

The price point – most Korean skincare is waaaaayyyy more affordable than their western counterparts. Simply put, one of the main reasons behind this is that all the products are manufactured from locally sourced ingredients and have less active (read: aggressive) ingredients than their western counterparts

Korean beauty and skincare is not designed to give you overnight results, nor does it promise as much. Korean skincare is all about consistency and patience. Many of the brands harness the power of nature and work to transform your skin layer by layer gently. In k-beauty, the focus is on prevention rather than cure (though those pimple patches are heavenly!). Why wait until wrinkles appear to fight them? Why not begin with soothing, hydrating, anti-aging skincare from the get-go.

While some of the ingredients may sound weird, wonderful, or downright scary, like green tea, soybean, snail mucin, bee venom, starfish, or jellyfish extract, each ingredient plays a valuable and interesting role in making the products effective.

This blog will be about unraveling some of the myths surrounding k-beauty, suggesting routines for specific skin concerns, breaking down the various steps included in the infamous 10-step skincare routine, and running through some of the more interesting ingredients listed above.
